Breif History of Service

Besides the Monastery's traditional culture & academic curriculum, it has been actively involved in many other spheres of services to Institutions, Organization, Communities & individuals alike.

Recounting over the last three decades of its reestablishment at Bylakuppe in South India, there has been a phenomenal progress in its service field all along with the growth of the Monastery, wherein the first batch of 197 monkis from Tibet, was the backbone in laying the foundation for the rehabilitation & survival means, toiling hard in clearing the forestland of 225 acres for dwelling & cultivation, amidst the unaccustomed climate & region.

The reestablishment of the Monastery gave the Tibetan refugee settlers of Bylakuppe a fresh source to their traditional Dharma practice & culture back into their spiritual lives, amidst the traumatic experience from loss of their homeland & the survivial for life in a totally different region & climate.

Gradually with the growth of the Monastery in member strength & its activities, there has been spontaneous development in the diversity & reach of its service extended to communities, devotees & public.

In the present senario, the various sections & committies of the Monastery have in their programs, activities that are of beneficial service to the community, devotees and to poor & needy individuals.

The Monastery at any given time, provide relief to the different nature of situations. Regularly there are individuals, groups & small organizations seeking financial support & contribution from the Monastery.

Prime Mission

The monastery's prime mission of preservation & promotion of its traditional monastic culture & practice, to teach and disseminate the teachings of Buddha forms one of the principal service obligation to the Tibetan community and to all enthusiastic devotees & communities alike. This has brought about the huge member strength of the Monastery, with pupils from all the regions of Tibet, the Himalayan regions of India, South East Asia, the Pacific and western states.

The monastery's profound & in-depth Buddhist course studies programmed in the tradtional system & well disciplined manner have laid the foundation in establishing the status as one of the largest & prime learning centres of Buddhism. Over the last two decades, there has been a phenomenal increase in members initiating into the Monastery enrolling for the monastic course that at present stands well over 3500 - 3700 bonafide members that include over 2700 pupils enroled for the monastic academic course.

Subsequently there has been a dramatic increase in graduation of Geshes & Lharam Geshes each year.

Many of the graduates embark on Dharma service as Teachers, Instructors & Guide to different Buddhist Institutions & Organizations in many small & big cities of the developed & the developing world - America, Europe, Pacific & South East Asia. Majority of the scholars & spiritual teachers of Buddhist institutions & organizations are members who have qulaified from this Monastery.

Thus the extent & reach of the monastery's dharma service to the varied communities of the world is one of the outstanding fulfilment of our objectives.

Lately the monastery has initiated in launching a multipurpose platform where Dharma & Social service can be administered besides the Monastery's regular curriculum, to meet the numerous quest of enthusiastic visitors of local & foreign origin. The construction of this project took off two years back, with the building moderately completed in ecember 2004.

Birth of Yiga Choeling
For the first time, the Monastery has formerly initiated in launching a multipurpose platform, through which Dharma (spiritual) & Social Service programs can be administered, to meet the longed aspiration of the numerous visitors & enthusiasts on receiving Dharma course at the Monastery.

Thus Sera Jey Yiga Choeling Center was born.

This initial phase of the project, construction work, took off two years ago, which was moderately completed & inaugurated in December 2004 when special guests of the Monastery at His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Teaching was hosted as the accommodation venue.

The Guest House provides accomodation service to participants of Dharma Course, Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and open to Visitors, Guests, etc... The rooms are well furnished, serene & comfortable.

  IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR FOREIGN VISITORS  
 

PAP (Protected Area Permit)

Sera Jey Monastery located inside Bylakuppe Tibetan Refugee Settlement is regulated as restricted area by the Government of India to local & foreign public, as is the case of all other Tibetan Refugee Settlements in India.

PAP (Protected Area Permit) from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India) - New Delhi is required for foreign nationals to visit Sera Jey Monastery or Tibetan Settlement. Without the PAP foreign nationals can only visit the Monastery during the day but cannot stay overnight.

The PAP is issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India - New Delhi. Normally it requires 3 months from the time of Application to the approval of the PAP.

Yiga Choeling Center offers service to guests, visitors & participants of Dharma course in filing & obtaining the PAP approval.

A nominal fee of Rs. 450.00 is charged for each PAP, to cover miscellaneous expenditures - stationary, postage, fax / telephone, etc... The fee can be remited to Yiga Choeling Center at the time of visit.

As processing of PAP takes 3 months time from the date of filing the Application at normal circumstances, necessary requirements should be sent to us well before three & half months in advance to prepare & file the applications.
