of this Monastery is based on the traditional system as followed
in Tibet. The traditional system has been successively followed
to this present age, amidst the many and varied changes in
time and environment. That clearly surmises the soundness
& versatility of the system. This achievement can also
be attributed to generations of total dedication & commitment
that has successfully carried on this traditional system of
organization amidst changing time & technology.
The organization structure
is classified into two distinct divisions - Spiritual Administration
and General Administration.
The Abbot / Khenpo is the chief
head of each & overall Administration. And His Holiness

by the General Board Members. These short-listed candidates
are forwarded to His Holiness The Dalai Lama, who will select
one likely candidate. The selected candidate will henceforth
take the Abbotship of the Monastery for the full service term

KHANGTSEN |
|
| |
Khangtsens are hostel
sections of the Monastery. The members of the Monastery belong
to one specific Khangtsen, which is affiliated to the region
of his origin. And each new comer is placed in a specific
Khangtsen according to his place of origin.
This system of Khangtsen or
Hostel Division & its representation signifies organization
of high quality, which facilitates in maintaining the diverse
pupils and especially new comers to live with fellow folks,
thus avoiding hardship & inconvenience to individuals
in vocal language & other related problems.
This traditional system of
maintaining Khangtsen/hostel division is still practiced to
this day. Before 1959, at Sera Jey Monastery there were 18
different Khangtsens, each representing specific regions of
Tibet. However, since the re-establishment of the Monastery
at exile in India, the total no of Khangtsen has been merged
to 14 nos. |

SERA JEY SECONDARY SCHOOL |
|
| |
The steppingstone
of Sera Jey Monastery.
The Monastery is privileged and fortunate to have a well-established
modern School. Around 600 young novice monks of the Monastery
attend the school classes on regular basis, where modern academic
education from primary to high school level is imparted, like
any other modern school in the exiled Tibetan community in
India.
It is here, where the young
novice on being initiated into the Monastery, are first sent
to this school to receive primary & high school education.
Besides the benefit of formal academic education, the pupils
also have the benefit of Tibetan language, literature &
history education at the school level. This has tangible advantage
in their pursuance of Monastic course of Buddhist Text &
Philosophy.
This privilege of formal school
education is a first of its kind in a Monastery and in the
history of monastic culture, which the pupils are really fortunate
& grateful to avail such a benefit.
The present new Sera Jey Secondary
School is founded under the able leadership of Dr. Tenzin
Sherab, the school Principal who dedicatedly strived to develop
from the one time small primary school to the present - a
well-developed modern school, registered & affiliated
to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) of Government
of India.
A three-member committee with
Principal as the chief executive & administrative head
are elected by the Monastery's Governing General Body to administer
and manage the School.
The school faculty has the
necessary academic, physical & personal development curriculum
and activities, and a team of resourceful & dedicated
Teachers under the leadership of their visionary Principal.
The school and its pupils have
the privilege of high potential to impart & receive modern
knowledge & education to the young minds, which is otherwise
absent in a monkshood's secluded life. In the short span since
its development, the results has been very concrete and encouraging,
with good passing percentage in Board exams and in the overall
development of the graduating pupils.
On joining the Monastic University
after graduating from School, the acquired knowledge on basic
general science & humanities and the language of English
creates a vital resourceful mind and knowledge in their long
journey ahead in the pursuit of Buddhist Text & Philosophy.
Hence, great hope and future
lies in Sera Jey Secondary School and its pupils.

SERA JEY HEALTH CARE COMMITTEE |
|
| |
Sanctuary for the
sick & weak.
Sera Jey Health Care Committee
was initially established with an objective to provide health
care & medical services to monks of this Monastery. But
nevertheless, the need for others is wholly respected &
sympathised - the sick & poor monks, nuns other than this
Monastery, lay public - Tibetan settlers and local Indians
are welcomed and equally cared & treated alike without
any discrimination.
The history of Sera Jey Health
Care Committee has its beginning in the late eighties, during
one of his His Holiness The Dalai Lama's visit to the Monastery.
When His Holiness expressed concern on the state of health
of a large section of the Monastery's population, where malnourishment
& tuberculosis was rampantly inflicting severe destructive
health problems, following the increasing no of new arrivals
from Tibet.
Witnessing and foreseeing to
this state of danger & plight, His Holiness The Dalai
Lama granted a contribution of Rs.50, 000.00 (a big amount
at the time) in the year 1989. Thus this was the creator -
the germinating seed, which rooted and sprouted to a healthy,
strong, rich & harmonious tree, whose fruits has and is
ever benefiting & serving the sick & needy.
Hence following then, in 1989
the Monastery's Governing General Body proposed and passed
a resolution for the formation of a Health Centre. Setting
the basis of this Centre, on the special emphasis of His Holiness
The Dalai Lama and in the development of the community's health.
Thus a five-member committee with the Abbot as the Chairman
was elected by the Governing General Body to establish &
administer this proposed Health Care Centre.
From its very beginning, the
Health Care Committee was programmed specially for the treatment
and eradication of Tuberculosis. Free consultation, diagnosis,
anti - Tuberculosis treatment, drugs with special supplementary
protein diets are given, and the services of TB specialist
doctor every month are made available to TB patients.
The most tangible services
are free Medical Consultation and dispensing of medicines
as low as 50 % concession of its cost price. This concession
is given to all - monks, nuns, lay people- Tibetans &
Indians and visitors. This particular scheme has been the
most beneficial service to a vast majority of the patients
who visit the Health Care Centre.
Since then, much progress and
development has been made & served. The working staffs
are monks, who are well trained & experienced and form
a compatible team of sincere and dedicated caretakers of the
various departments - Dispensary, laboratory, X-ray, Ward,
Treatment, Sanitation and Drinking Water Supply.
Sera Jey Health Care Committee
besides its beneficent medical services has also contributed
to the drinking water supply to a vast majority of the Monastery's
residential quarters. And likewise Sanitation has been another
major activity that has practically benefited to the community
by maintaining cleaner roads, drains & sewage of the campus
and its surroundings.
Hence, Sera Jey Health Care
Committee has brought a healthy environment and condition
to the Monastery and to all beneficiaries from its services.

SERA JEY COMMUNITY MESS KITCHEN |
|
| |
Sera Jey Kitchen
Mess started right from the time of its re-establishment here
at Bylakuppe, in South India, when the 197 indigenous monks
of Sera Jey from Tibet, was resettled to Bylakuppe from the
special refuge camp at Baxa in the state of West Bengal.
The Kitchen Mess was started
with the first 197 native monks of Sera Jey Monastery from
Tibet, during which the expense was met by the small income
generated from land -cultivation. The State & Union Government
of India granted these lands.
And with the initiation of
new & novice monks to the Monastery, the limited revenue
from the land cultivation was inadequate to meet the mess
expenses and for the maintenance of the Monastery.
So all new & novice monks were charged for the food at
mess, on monthly basis. The monthly mess charge was very little,
as the food served was poor & frugal. No doubt many of
the monks suffer from malnourished related illness and tuberculosis.
But then the year 1997 brought
about a turning point in the gruelling & frugal Kitchen
Mess of Sera Jey, following the grace & good will of Venerable
Lama Zopa Rinpoche's commitment to fund the Food Program of
Sera Jey Monastery by his esteemed FPMT (Foundation For Preservation
of the Mahayana Tradition) organization.
The New Sera Jey Kitchen Mess
first commenced from 7 August 1997.
The new Kitchen Mess caters
to the entire monks of Sera Jey Monastery, Morning Tea &
Bread, Mid Day Meal & Evening Meal. And for the total
pupil strength of over 3500, no doubt the kitchen mess is
really big and adequately equipped to meet the requirements.
The FPMT organization
sponsors the Morning Tea & Bread, Mid Day & Evening
Meal throughout the year.
By the grace and benefaction of Venerable Lama Zopa Rinoche
and his esteemed FPMT Organization, the Monastery's Morning
Tea & Bread will be supported for the entire year from
January 2006, which is one big development from its earlier
program of 90 day of a year's support. This has brought about
one of the important change in the short history of its re-establishment.
Which has made possible for the Monastery, to serve all the
meals of the day to its monks free of cost. FPMT
website www.fpmt.org And besides the reputed & commendable
FPMT, another devoted Organization has also been an ardent
supporter of this Monastery. It is - Sera Jey Support
Committee (SJSC) in USA, founded by a dedicated &
kind American couple - Mrs. Devon Holmes & Mr. Andrew
Holmes of USA.
Due to unavoidable cirucmstance, the
program activities of SJSC Morning Tea & Bread have been
totally discontinued, following the resolution passed by the
Monastery resulting from financial difficulties. The Monastery
& the acting President of SJSC - Mis. Lauren Cottrell
have mutally agreed to this resolution with effect from 19
March 2006. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
History of SJSC
Sera Jey Support Committee was a non-profit charitable corporation established on September 3, 1999 in the State of New York, USA, by an American couple – Mrs. Devon Holmes and Andrew Holmes, a devoted friend and follower of this Monastery. |
