Overview of Monastery's curriculum
Tibetan Buddhist Philosophical studies of Lama Tsong Khapa tradition has been the prime monastic curriculum & culture of Sera Jey Monastery since its founding in 15 th Century in Tibet .
The Five Major Treatises of Buddhism is Monastery's core study curriculum –
(1) The Prajnaparamita (perfection of wisdom)
(2) Madhyamaka (middle way)
(3) Pramana (valid cognition)
(4) Vinaya (monastic disciplines)
(5) Abhidharma (phenomenology)
The curriculums are systematically structured in stages & classes, with examinations conducted at each level. On successful completion of the curriculum, the scholar is awarded with the academic title of Geshe (equivalent to Master of Buddhist Philosophy) and Lharam Geshe (equivalent to Doctorate of Buddhist Philosophy).
The Monastery's traditional curriculum & practice has developed & recognized to be one of the prime & largest learning center of Tibetan Buddhism. And there has been considerable rise in the no of pupils undertaking the monastic course every year. Presently pupil monks registered for the academic curriculum numbers over 2700.
Many of its graduating scholars have been serving as resident & visiting teachers in various Monasteries, Centers & Institutes abroad and within India .
The Monastery has now avowed to bring its pristine knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism & Culture to the reach of common devotees, students & academicians through introduction of Short Term Course delving on Tibetan Buddhist Studies, Philosophy, Monastic Life & Culture, in the most common language to all – English. |
